Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition to ensure safety.
2. Locate the deck lift lever and set it to the lowest position to gain better access to the deck.
3. Remove the deck by unscrewing the bolts and disconnecting the PTO cable.
4. Place the deck on a flat surface, such as a workbench or garage floor, and identify the deck belt.
5. Release the tension on the deck belt by pulling the idler pulley arm back and sliding the belt off the pulley.
6. Take note of the routing of the old deck belt, so you can easily install the new one later.
7. Remove the old deck belt by sliding it off the pulleys and removing it from the deck.
8. Install the new deck belt by following the routing that you noted earlier, starting at the engine pulley and working your way around the deck.
9. Ensure the deck belt is properly seated on all the pulleys, including the idler pulley.
10. Reconnect the PTO cable and reinstall the deck by aligning it with the brackets and securing the bolts.
11. Test the new deck belt by engaging the blades and checking for proper operation.
12. Raise the deck lift lever back to its original position and test the mower on a flat surface to ensure proper operation.

Cub Cadet Z-Force 44 Deck Belt Replacement Guide 

1. Prepare the mower for maintenance by placing your zero-turn on a level, flat surface. Before beginning any work, be sure the mower is off and the engine's had time to cool. Disconnect the spark plug ignition wire and make sure you engage the parking brake. This ensures your safety, and the safety of those near you. 

2. Remove the deck belt rod. Take the belt-keeper rod off and then remove the deck belt from the mower engine pulley. 

3. Lower the deck height. Adjust your deck lift lever so it is in the highest possible position, and slide in wooden blocks for more support. Now lower the deck of your mower onto the wooden blocks. 

4. Release the deck. You'll want to release the deck from the hangar brackets by removing the left and right J-Hooks. Now, carefully remove the wooden blocks from under the deck to lower it even further. Remove the click pin from the front deck hangar rod. 

5. Remove the mower deck. Begin by putting the deck height lever back in the highest possible position, and then turn the front wheels to the left. Slide the cutting deck out and to the right. If you find that you need to replace any other parts on your mower deck, now is the time to do so. 

6. Remove mower deck belt covers by using a ratchet. Also remove the nuts and bolts that secure the belt keeper to the deck idler pulley. Separate pulleys. 

7. Replacement time. Move the left idler pulley away from the machine, and lift off the old mower deck belt. Now you can loop the new deck belt around both pulleys. Reassemble nuts, bolts, pulleys, and covers. Follow the previous steps in reverse to complete step 7. 

8. Replace the zero-turn mower deck by sliding the deck back underneath the mower. Maneuver the new lawn mower deck belt around the engine pulley, and secure it in place with the rivet and rod. 

9. Replace hangar brackets. Put the click pin back into the deck's front hangar rod. Now replace the J-hooks back into their brackets on the left and right.

As a general safety rule, you should always use the slope gauge (included in your Cub Cadet RZT 50 Manual) to measure the slop before operating your mower. If the slop is greater than 15 degrees, don't operate your Cub Cadet on the area, as it could cause serious injury. 

Dos: 

–Mow across slopes, not up and down. Be very careful when changing direction. 

–Keep an eye out for holes, ruts, bumps, rocks, and other hidden objects. Tall grass can hide obstacles, and uneven terrain can overturn your machine. 

–Operate at a slow speed. The speed you choose be slow enough that you don't need to stop while on the slope. You should also avoid starting or stopping on a slope. If your tires have difficulty maintaining traction, disengage the blades and proceed carefully and slowly straight down the slope. 

–Refer to the Cub Cadet recommendations for wheel weights or counterweights for improving stability. 

–When using grass catchers or other attachments, use extra care, as they can change the machine's stability. 

–All movement on the slope should be gradual and slow, never sudden. Don't make quick changes in speed or direction, as these rapid movements can cause the front of the machine to lift and rapidly flip over backwards, resulting in serious injury. 

Don'ts: 

–Don't turn on a slop unless it's absolutely necessary; then turn slowly uphill and use extra care while turning. 

–Don't mow near ditches, drop-offs, or embankments. These surfaces could cause the mower to suddenly turn over if a wheel goes over the edge of a cliff or ditch. 

–Don't attempt to stabilize your Cub Cadet by putting your foot on the ground. 

–Don't use the grass catcher attachment on steep slopes. 

–Don't mow wet grass; the reduced traction may cause sliding. 

–On slopes greater than 5 degrees, don't tow heavy pull-behind attachments, like a lawn roller or loaded dump cart. This extra weight tends to push the tractor downhill, and you may lose control of your equipment.

My snow blower won't discharge snow. What's wrong? 

If your blower/thrower isn't discharging, check the following: 

1. Auger drive belt: is it worn, loose, slipping, or off the pulley? Refer to your owner's manual for proper adjustment. 

2. Check the Auger control cable for proper adjustment. 

3. Are the auger or impeller pins sheared? If you need to install new shear pins, refer to your owner's manual. 

4. Inspect the discharge chute. Is it blocked? If so: 

    A) Never clean out the chute with your hands. Use the clean out tool. 

    B) Stop the engine and make sure all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire, and keep the wire away from the plug to prevent accidental starting. 

    C) Use the clean out tool to clean the discharge chute. 

My snow blower has lost speed or traction. What should I check? 

1. Make sure the drive belt is secure in the pulleys, and that it's not worn or stretched. 

2. Inspect the drive disc for wear or contaminants. 

3. If your drive cable needs adjustment, refer to your owner's manual. 

4. Check tires for proper inflation pressure.

Skid shoes control the height of the scraper bar to the ground. The scraper bar protects the auger and auger housing from wear. When set at the correct height, the skid shoes prevents the scraper bar and augers from scraping against the ground. Skid shoes will wear down during during use, so the scraper bar needs to be checked regularly and skid shoes should be adjusted or replaced when necessary.

1. Place snowblower on a flat surface and adjust tire to the recommended PSI that is located on the side of the tire.

2. Place spacers under the scraper bar–NOT under the skid shoes. A piece of cardboard or washers works well for this purpose, as seen in the image below.  

   1/8 inch spacers are recommended for paved surfaces.

   1/2 inch spacers are recommended for gravel surfaces.

3. Loosen the bolts holding the skid shoes to the side of the blower housing.

3. Slide the skid shoes down and tighten bolts.

Is your Cub Cadet snow thrower still stored away in the back of your garage? Maybe it's accumulated some dust out in the shed? With winter temperatures around the corner, snow is sure to follow. Follow our easy 5-step guide to prepare your snow blower for winter. 

1. Change the oil on your Cub Cadet snow thrower. You should also change the oil after the first five hours of winter-use, as well as at the end of the season. 
2. Check your spark plugs. Are they dirty? Clean the plugs. If you notice any rust or corrosion, you'll need to replace your spark plugs. Use our Parts Lookup tool to find replacement spark plugs!
3. Inspect all of your belts. Major wear and tear can cause damage to you or your equipment. If you need Cub Cadet replacement belts, we can help!
4. Re-fuel. Before adding new fuel, you'll need to drain your gas tank. When you add fresh fuel, you'll want to be sure your fuel includes a stablizer. This will prevent the fuel from going bad if you don't have to run your snow thrower for a couple of milder winter weeks. 
5. Before you run your Cub Cadet snow thrower, you'll want to sure all parts are in supreme working order. Lubricate the drive and chassis. Be sure to tighten nuts and bolts. 

When you've completed these five simple steps, start up your snow thrower and let it run for a few minutes to be sure no other issues arise. First, think about the size of your yard. 

If your yard is small, a lightweight, electric blower will best suit your needs. 

For mid-size yards, think of a 2 or 4 cycle gas blower. These units are limited by power cords, and some come with vacuum bags for collecting the leaves. 

If you have a large yard, you may want to invest in a backpack or wheeled blower. The backpack blowers are more comfortable for longer periods of operation, while wheeled blowers are more powerful and ideal for clearing a lot of leaves from large yards. 

Next, consider the power and speed ratings of your ideal equipment. There are two ratings to pay attention to: MPH and cubic feet/minute (CFM). CFM measures the volume of air the blower can move in a minute, and the MPH measures the speed at which the machine blows. The higher the numbers, the higher blowing power your equipment has. If you need to remove heavy, wet leaves, you want to look for higher CFM and MPH ratings. 

Lastly, consider the ease of use of your Troy-Bilt leaf blower. Electric blowers require little maintenance and are very easy to use for small lawns. 4 cycle gas blowers take straight fuel, so require no mixing of oil and gas.

Remove the ignition wire and spark plug.

Drain your fuel tank, keeping the fuel in a portable, government-approved container. 

Step Three 

Tip the mower onto its side so the air filter is up.

Step Four

On the side of the deck, remove the self-tapping screws.

Step Five

Safety first - wear your protective gloves. Secure the blade using your blade removal tool. 

Step Six

Remove the blade retaining bolt, followed by removing the blade itself. 

Step Seven

Remove the self-tapping secures that secure the mower drive belt cover and engine baffle to the deck. 

Step Eight

Remove the belt cover and baffle. 

Step Nine

Remove the drive belt from the drive pulley and blade adapter. 

Step Ten

Remove the blade adapter from the crankshaft. 

Step Eleven

Working from the back of the mower, exercise caution as you remove your Cub Cadet mower drive belt from the transmission pulley. 

Step Twelve

To access the engine pulley, push down on the deck baffle. Slide the drive belt off the pulley and out from under the deck. 

Step Thirteen

Replace your old belt with a new Cub Cadet drive belt. Work the belt between the deck and baffle by routing it around the transmission pulley, then the engine pulley.

Step Fourteen

Tighten the self-tapping screws that secure the deck baffle to the deck. 

Step Fifteen

Make sure you’re wearing gloves as you secure the blade using your universal blade removal tool. Replace the blade adapter and blade retaining bolt

Step Sixteen

Place the mower back on its wheels. 

Step Seventeen

Reattach your spark plug ignition wires, and refill the fuel tank.

As usual, you should always refer to your owner's manual for further safety and maintenance instruction. Depending on your mower model, the directions for cleaning your lawn deck might be slightly different. 

Is your mower equipped with a washout port? Start here! 

1. If your Cub Cadet mower is equipped with a washout port, park your mower on a paved, flat surface. Lower the cutting height to your cutting setting, remove the bag, and attach a garden hose to the washout port. 

2. Once you've turned on the hose, start your engine and stand behind the machine while engaging the mower blades. You should run your mower's engine until you no longer see clippings coming out from underneath the deck. 

3. After the mower deck is clean, stop the engine, then shut off and disconnect the hose from your mower's washout power.

4. Once you've disconnected the hose, you should start the engine once again. Stand behind your mower as you engage the mower blades for a few minutes as to dry the mower's underside.

No washout port? These are the instructions you're looking for. 

1. Just as you would with a washout port-equipped machine, park your mower on a paved, flat surface. After you've shut off the engine, lower the cutting height. 

2. Using a garden hose, aim the water at the front of the right rear wheel, right into the pavement. 

3. After spraying for a few seconds, stop the hose. Engage your mower blades, and run the mower until you no longer see clippings coming from underneath the mower. 

4. As with a washout port-equipped mower, you should engage the blades once more to dry the underside of the deck.

Another way to clean your lawn deck is to scrape the underside. If you're going to clean the lawn deck this way, you should make sure the engine is off and all moving parts of ceased movement before beginning this maintenance task. When tipping the mower on its side, you should double check that the air filter's side is up – this prevents any oil from moving into the air filter and carburetor. When scraping your lawn deck, you should use a scraper or a putty knife.

1) Make sure the mower is turned completely off. Set the parking brake. 

2) Lower the mower deck to the lowest setting. You can do this by moving the adjustment lever on the right fender to the lowest notch. 

3) Underneath the mower, find the mower clutch pulley. Remove the nuts from the belt guard – you'll need a socket and ratchet wrench for this step. After you've removed the nuts, you can remove the guard. Take the mower drive belt off from the clutch pulley. 

4) On the mower deck's left side, find the deck retaining pin. Release the deck from the mounting bracket by removing this pin. Repeat this step for the deck's right side. 

5) After removing both retaining pins, raise the deck adjustment lever to the highest position. 

6) Locate the retaining pin on the deck engagement cable near the mower deck's rear. Remove it. Then, remove the retaining pin from the stabilizer rod at the front of the deck. Remove the rod from its mounting hole. 

7) Now you can slide the mower deck from underneath the mower. Make sure that the underside is facing upwards. Use a wooden block to keep the blades from turning. Place this wood black on the center baffle on the deck. 

8) Make sure you are using work gloves for the remaining steps! Remove the center nut from the blade you need to replace. 

9) After the center nut is removed, you can remove the blade by lifting it straight off of the cutting deck. When you install the new blade, its serial number should be facing upwards onto the cutting deck. Using a torque wrench, tighten the nut between 70 and 90 foot-pounds. 

10) Turn the mower deck back to its original position and slide it underneath the mower. Re-install the deck by following the removal steps in reverse order.

How to Remove the Cutting Deck on a Cub Cadet LTX1050

1) Place the PTO/Blade Engage knob in the OFF position. Engage the parking brake.  

2) Lower the deck by moving the deck lift lever into the bottom notch  on the right fender. 

3) Locate the PTO clutch under the front of your tractor. 

4) Remove the belt guard and belt by:

    A) Removing the hex screw

    B) Pulling the belt keeper rod to the right and down to remove

    C) Remove the deck belt from around the tractor's electric PTO clutch

5) Looking at the cutting deck from the left side of the tractor, locate the deck support pin on the rear left side of the deck. 

6) Pull the deck support pin outward to release the deck from the deck lift arm. 

7) Now repeat the above steps on the tractor's ride side. 

8) Move the deck lift lever into the top notch to raise the deck lift arms up and out of the way. 

9) Remove the cotter pin from the end of the stabilizer rod and slide the stabilizer out of the hanger bracket on the deck. 

10) Gently slide the cutting deck from the right side out from underneath the tractor.

Clear the Leaves 

Keep an eye out for dead leaves early on. You don't want to wait until the last second to clear your lawn of dead leaves – the debris can suffocate new growth, especially when it's compacted underneath inches of snow and ice. To rid your yard of harmful fungi and dead patches of grass, give your yard a heavy once-over with the lawn rake.

Lower Mower Height

In winter, new growth is minimal at best. When preparing for seasonal growth, lower your mower height to 1 1/4 inches. If you have very tall grass – higher than 3 inches – mow to 2 inches, and let it rest. In a few days, take the height down to 1 1/4 inches.

Change the Oil on your Cub Cadet Zero Turn Mower

Keep in mind that you can use the siphon pump or drain plug method to change the oil in your mower–the methods are similar, but require a couple different steps, all detailed below in our Oil Change Guide. 

1. Prepare yourself and your equipment for maintenance. Move your lawn mower to a flat surface and make sure the mower is off.

2. Wait until the engine has cooled before beginning any work. Once cooled, take out the ignition key and disconnect spark plug ignition wires. For added safety, engage the parking brake. 

3. Clean any debris that's found its way near the oil fill tube. Once cleaned, remove the dip stick.

3. Using a siphon pump, put the top tube in the dip stick hole and the bottom tube into the oil pan. Use a recyclable bottle or empty oil container to more easily dispose of the oil after you're done. To prime the siphon pump, pump the handle three or four times. Once the liquid begins to flow, discontinue pumping. 

4. After you remove the pump, add your new oil. Refer to your operator's manual for any oil specifications unique to your mower model.

5. If you're going to use the drain plug method rather than the siphon pump, put a catch basin or empty container under the drain hose. Snap the hose onto the opening and position over the oil catcher. 

6. Now you can remove the drain plug in order to empty the old oil from your mower. 

7. Still operating with the drain plug method, replace the drain plug and remove the drain hose. Add new oil. 

8. When you've added the new oil, you can replace the dip stick. Wait a few minutes. Check your dip stick to ensure that you've filled to the appropriate oil level.  

9. Inspect the oil filter before removing it from the mower. Once you've removed the old oil filter, lubricate the gasket of the new oil filter before installing. 

10. Now you're ready to re-attach the spark plug ignition wire. Make sure you're responsible in appropriately disposing of the old mower oil. Also be sure to disengage the parking brake, as well as running the mower in a well-ventilated place to circulate the new oil through the engine before mowing.

Using the Right Snow Thrower 

One of the easiest ways to decide on the right snow thrower is to evaluate the snowfall in your area. You don't need a big, powerful snow thrower for just a little snow, just like a little single-stage snow thrower won't do much good if you're trying to clear those tricky, three feet high drifts. 

If your area only receives a light snow, a single-stage thrower will do the job. For medium to large cleanups of heavy snow, invest in a two-stage snow thrower. For extremely wet and heavy snow, we suggest a three-stage snow thrower. 

Designate the Driveway

When everything's covered in snow, how can you tell where you need to start and stop your snow thrower? We suggest outlining your walkways and driveway with reflector stakes prior to the first heavy snowfall, if possible. By outlining these areas, you can help protect plants and hedge roots. 

Pick the Pile Up Zone

When snow throwing, you want to make sure you're not allowing the snow to build up on the foundation walls or sides of your home. If snow ends up in those areas, it can melt, refreeze, and previous cracks have the potential to widen. In a worst case scenario, these cracks can open wide enough to let water seep into the walls of your home, causing unnecessary water damage and rotting wood.

Your snow chute might be clogged for one of two reasons: heavy snow, or moving too slowly. Heavy snow will clump together faster and more easily than a light fluffy coating, and can get stuck in the snow blower auger and chute. Another possibility is that you're walking too slowly. While you might think moving slowly will clear your driveway more efficiently, it actually allows the snow more time to stick together, and, you guessed it–clog the chute. If you're dealing with either of these two predicaments, these 7 easy steps will have you up and running before the hot chocolate is ready. 

1. Safety is always our top priority at Cub Cadet Parts n' More. Don't ever use bare hands to perform maintenance! Make sure your engine is turned completely off, and all moving parts have stopped moving before beginning any sort of maintenance work on your Cub Cadet outdoor power equipment.

2. Release the drive and auger controls. 

3. Remove the ignition key to ensure that the engine has come to a full stop. 

4. You should find your chute clean-out tool fastened to the auger housing. Remove it from the mounting clip. Location may vary according to model, so refer to your operator's manual if the clean-out tool is located elsewhere. 5. Take the shovel-shaped end and scoop out any ice or snow that's become lodged in or around the chute. 

6. Now replace the clean-out tool to the mounting clip on the auger housing. Replace the ignition key to start the engine. 

7. To make sure that all ice and snow have been removed from the shoot, stand behind the snow thrower and engage the auger control. By doing this for a few seconds, you'll ensure that all ice and now are removed from the chute.

• Be sure you've pressed the prime bulb slowly and fully 10 times. 
• Your fuel might be too old. Flush it out and use new fuel. 
• Clean the spark plug and replace the part if necessary. 
• Clean the spark arrestor and replace if necessary. 

2. The engine stalls out or doesn't have as much power as usual. 

• The primary cause could be old fuel. Drain the fuel tank and add new gas. 
• Refer to your operator's manual and check that your carburetor is set to the proper adjustment. 
• Lastly, inspect the spark plug and arrestor. Clean these parts and replace if necessary. 

3. I can't get the engine to idle. 

• Empty out and replace the old fuel. 
• Check your operator's manual to ensure you have proper carburetor adjustment. 
• Clean the air filter and replace if necessary.

4. The engine starts but won't accelerate. 

• Drain any remaining old fuel and add new. 
• Stop the engine and see if the cutting attachment needs to be cleaned. Clean if necessary. 
• Refer to the operator's manual to confirm proper carburetor adjustment. 
• Clean the air filter. Replace if necessary. 
• Inspect the spark arrestor. Clean and replace if necessary.

Fall Lawn Care Guide

• Mow as needed through fall. Before the last two cuttings of the season, adjust the mower blade to the lowest setting. Keep in mind that you don't want to mow more than one third of the grass blade at one time. If you need to, gradually lower your blade height until reaching the final two cuttings. 
• Fall is a great time to aerate your lawn. Aerating in autumn allows for the fertilizer, water, and oxygen to reach the roots. You can usually rent a gas-powered aerator for about $70/day, or hire a local landscaper for larger yards. 
• Pace your fall raking. You don't want to wait until all of the leaves have fallen from your trees before you begin to clean them up. If you leave large amounts of leaf cover, they'll grow wet, stick together, and create a mat over the yard that can suffocate your grass and breed fungal disease. 
• If you're only going to fertilize once a year, fall is the best time to do it. By fertilizing in the fall, your grass will grow deep roots, and still have nutrients left over for a healthy start come next spring. 
• If you have any baren areas in your lawn, fall is also a good time to spread new seed. The most effective way to deal with balding spots is to purchase an all-in-one lawn repair mixture. This mixture will have grass seed, a quick-starter lawn fertilizer, and organic mulch. While laying the mixture, scratch the soil loose with a rack. Distribute a healthy layer of the mix over all balding areas. Compact the mixture lightly, then make sure to water thoroughly. Water the areas every other day for two weeks. 
• Did you have a small field of dandelions pop up in your yard this year? The weeds in your yard are in high energy absorbing mode come fall. They'll even take in weed killer! Many herbicides that will kill off the weeds should be used in early-to-mid autumn when daytime temperatures are still over 60 degrees.

1. Always complete maintenance tasks with safety in mind first. Make sure all moving parts have come to a stop before inspecting, cleaning, and repairing your equipment. 
2. Once all parts have stopped moving, disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it against the engine. 
3. Begin by tightening the blades, screws, nuts, and engine mounting bolts. Tighten these parts frequently as they can come loose with the motion of the machine. 
4. Inspect your blades for damages. If you need to replace your Cub Cadet blade, find the replacement part in your manual or look it up with our Cub Cadet Parts Look Up tool. 
5. Make sure that your blades are sharp and are cutting well. When servicing your blades, make sure you use thick, protective gloves and eye protection. Never try to adjust your wheels or cutting height while the engine is still running. 
6. Regularly inspect your grass catcher, discharge cover, and trail shield for any damages that occur with use. If you do notice damage, promptly replace the worn parts. 
7. Regularly inspect the fuel line, tank, cap, and fittings for any leaking and cracking. If necessary, replace immediately. 
8. If you should run over something while mowing, make sure to stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug, and ground the wire before beginning your inspection.

During the summertime, you want to focus on maintaining the health of your lawn, so it's best to know how to identify when your grass is experiencing drought stress. Brown patches indicate drought stress. A lawn that gets too dry may become dormant and turn completely brown. 

1. Water your lawn with at least an inch of water each week. You can test your sprinklers by setting a plastic container nearby and timing how long it takes to water one inch. 

2. You actually don't need to water as much in the first few weeks of summer. If you allow your grass to experience mild drought stress, you'll encourage deeper root growth. 

3. It might seem like common sense to water your grass when it's the hottest part of the day, but this is actually incorrect. The best time to water is early in the morning, preferably when the grass is still wet with dew. Avoid watering in the evening as this can give the roots too much time to absorb the water which can have the same effects as overwatering. 

4. Overwatering can be tempting by dangerous for your lawn. Watering more often will not actually aid in the recovery of your grass; in fact, it can often have worse effects than drought stress. Too much water can weaken the roots and put your lawn at risk of fungal diseases and more weeds. 

5. If your lawn is suffering from brown spots, again, don't increase how often you water. Instead, spot-water these areas.

Your engine might take a little revving to get started. Start by emptying out any remaining fuel that's still in the tank from last season. Now fill your tank with fresh, clean fuel.

Remove the dipstick to check on your oil levels. If you use your snow thrower with an improper amount of oil, you run the risk of damaging your engine. Also, make sure you set the choke and push the primer bulb a couple of times before your first pull. If you have a push-button electric start model, you can skip the pull-starting step. 

Finally, check to see if your spark plug is unplugged, covered in build up, or if it's corroded. If you discover any of these issues, you'll need to clean and/or replace your spark plug.

Now onto the chute. Some snow throwers from Troy-Bilt are designed with an adjustable chute so you can control and change the direction and pitch of snow as you're clearing. With these models, heavy, wet snow or foreign objects might clog your chute. If this happens to you, have no fear! You can fix it by following these steps:

Release the auger and drive controls. Shut off the engine, but remain behind the handles until all of the moving parts on your snow thrower have stopped. Now, use your clean-out tool (using the shovel-shaped end) to break down and remove the ice or snow that's formed in and near the chute assembly. For most Troy-Bilt models, you'll find your clean-out tool on the rear of the auger housing. 

When you've successfully cleared out the chute, refasten the clean-out too to the mounting clip. Reinsert the ignition key and start your snow thrower back up. Stand in the operating position and engage the auger control for a few moments to clear any and all remaining ice and snow from the chute assembly. You're ready to clear more snow!

1. Perform any snow thrower maintenance necessary before the winter season begins. 

2. Before you want to use your snow thrower for the first time, let your snow thrower to run and warm up in a well-ventilated space. 

3. You want to be warm while snowblowing, but make sure you don't have any loose clothing hanging off that might get caught in the workings of the snow thrower, like scarves, loose pants, or shoelaces. 

4. While the snow thrower is on, don't put your feet or hands near any moving parts, the chute assembly, or the auger/impeller housing. Safety should always be first when you're operating your snow thrower, and if you get too close to any rotating parts, amputation is possible. If your snow thrower chute gets clogged during use, make sure you turn off the machine and wait until all moving parts have come to a full stop before cleaning out the clogged chute.

5. Even though you might be a pro-snow thrower, you should not try to bypass the auger/impeller control lever. The control lever is a safety mechanism and trying to bypass it causes the machine to become unsafe, and may cause injury to the operator. 

6. Before starting to snow throw, check to see that your control levers easily operate in both directions, and when released that they automatically return to the disengaged position. 

7. If your chute assembly is damaged in any way or entirely missing, do not operate your snow thrower. 

8. Never run your snow thrower in a poorly ventilated area. 

9. If you need to cross over a gravel or stone surface, use extra caution to be sure your snow thrower doesn't pick up and toss any remnants from the road.

Winterize your Lawn Mower

Clean the Cutting Deck

You've been cleaning your deck regularly all season, but now it's time to do it once more before you store your machine away. A clean cutting deck means a cleaner cut of your yard. If you don't clean the deck before winter, excess moisture in the stuck-on grass clippings can cause corrosion and rust on the deck. If your grass clippings are still recent, you can take a hose and spray the deck clean. If it's been a while since your last mow, the clippings might be more difficult to remove. If so, use a bristled pot scrubber or a plastic paint scraper to remove the clippings. 

Remove and Sharpen Blades

Routine maintenance should be completed at the start and end of every season. After removing and sharpening the blade, apply a light film of oil and reinstall. 

Spark Plugs

Remove your spark plug and spray oil into the cylinder. Pull your recoil handle five to six times so that the oil distributes evenly on the cylinder's wall. When you've finished oiling up the cylinder, replace the old spark plug with a new one. 

Stabilize the Fuel

Leaving excess fuel in the tank over the winter is terrible for the wellbeing of your mower. Condensation and ethanol, over time, will cause corrosion, clogs, and other costly problems in the fuel system. At the end of the season, run the tank dry if possible. If you're storing your mower indoors, in the basement, for example, all of the fuel must be emptied out, or your mower will quickly become a fire hazard inside your home. If your mower will be stored in the garage or a shed, fill the tank with fresh gas, and then add a fuel stabilizer. Before storing, run the mower for a few minutes so the fuel stabilizer makes its way through the carburetor. 

Finishing Up

Clean or replace your air filter. Wipe down the top of your mower deck. Oil and/or lubricate all of the exposed moving parts of your mower. Change the oil.

MTD Garden Tiller Operation Guide

• Relax while you till. Allow the wheels to pull the tiller along while the tines dig. 
• Walk on the unfinished side so you don't leave footprints in the fresh soil.
• Try not to push down on the handlebars in order to make the tiller dig deeper. 
• Never place your hands or feet near moving parts, and never use your tiller without light or good visibility. 
• Keep a strong, firm hold on the handles and be sure of your footing. 
• Use caution when tilling on harder ground. If the tines catch, it may propel the tiller forward. In this scenario, let go of the handlebars and don't attempt to control the machine.
• If you need to cross over or operate on gravel surfaces, use extreme caution.
• Always check behind you when moving backwards with the tiller and/or pulling the tiller towards you. 
• If you strike a foreign object while tilling, stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire. Ground the wire against the engine. Check the machine for any damage. Wood Chipper Maintenance Guide

1. In preparation for any repairs, cleanings, or inspections, make sure the engine and all moving parts have come to a complete stop. Spark plug wires should be disconnected and grounded against the engine. 

2. Inspect all screws and bolts for appropriate tightness. 

3. Make sure that all instruction and safety stickers are still intact and visible on the equipment. 

4. If your flail screen has become clogged, remove and clean. Don't use forceful sprays as it might contaminate your fuel system. 

5. To clean around the muffler and chute, use a dry cloth or brush. 

6. To lubricate chipper components, use light machine oil. 

7. Ensure the chipper is free of any debris before starting the motor. 

8. Change your air filter every 25 hours. 

9. Replace blades and spark plugs annually. 

10. Wash your collection bag every season. 

Before each use: 

1. Remove all debris. 

2. To make sure you avoid all malfunctions with the control switch, inspect and clean the control linkage. 

3. Fill fuel and oil. 

After 8 hours of use: 

1. Lubricate the chute release rod, control levers, discharge chute swivel povit joints, and all other moving parts. 

2. Make sure your machine has a full range of motion and smooth operation. 

3. Change the oil. After changing the oil after the first 8 hours, you only need the choice the oil after every 50 hours. 

When it's time for you to replace your trimmer line, follow our step-by-step guide.

Replace your Cub Cadet Trimmer Line

1. Prepare 10 feet of new trimmer line. You can either use 10 feet of twin-strand split line, or two ten foot strings of .095” trimmer line. You should refer to your owner's manual for specific replacement trimmer line specifications.
2. Once your new line is ready to be installed, you can take apart the cutting head. Do this by unscrewing the bump knob so you can remove the inner spring and wheel. Make sure you don't misplace the spring.
3. There are three steps to installing your new trimmer line. First, find two holes on the top of the inner reel. Put one end of each trimmer line into one hole. Pull the string through so the ends match up, but leave two to three inches of line remaining. Next, put the short ends of the trimmer line into the remaining inner reel hold. Pull the long end of the string to close your loop. Now locate the arrow at the top of the wheel. Following that direction, wind the trimmer line tightly around the spool. When you're left with 6 inches of string, push the ends into the holding slots marked .095”.
4. Now it's time to reassemble the string trimmer bump head. Remember that spring that you didn't misplace? At this point, you can replace it on the shaft. Find the eyelets on your spring head, and feet the new trimmer line through them. Now take the wheel, put it on the shaft, and line up your holding slots with the cutter head's eyelets. To compress the spring, you can hold down the wheel, then screw the bump knob back into the head.
5. Finally, you can free the trimmer line. To do this, pull both ends of the bump-head trimmer line gently to make sure the new line has been released from holding slots.

1. Remember your safety. Disconnect the spark plug wire. Place the mower on its side with air filter and carburetor facing up. 

2. Now you can begin to remove the mower blade - you should never try to sharpen the blade while it is still on the mower. Wearing work gloves to complete maintenance is highly advised. Remove the blade ball support and hex bolt that holds the blade and blade adapter to the engine crankshaft. Remove the blade and adapter from the crankshaft. Secure the blade in a vice. 

3. You can use a mower blade sharpener or file on a grinding wheel to sharpen the blade. When sharpening, follow the blade's original angle and grind. Grind each cutting edge equally to keep the blade balanced. 

4. Your blade must be balanced before replacing. Test this by balancing the blade on a round shaft screwdriver; shave the metal from the heavy side until you have an even balance. 

5. Lubricate the inner surface of the blade adapter and the engine crankshaft with light oil, then slide the blade adapter onto the crankshaft. 

6. Make sure that the side of the blade marked "bottom" faces the ground when the mower is turned right side up. The blade should be aligned and seated on the blade adapter flanges. Replace the blade bell support on the blade and align the notches with the small holes in the blade. Now replace and tighten the hex bolt to the recommended torque as advised by your manual. 

7. Turn the mower right side up and reconnect the spark plug. If you hear vibrations or noises when you start the mower, adjust the blade balance as necessary.

Cub Cadet Zero-Turn Mower Operation Guide

• Familiarize yourself with the owner's manual. Search for your Zero-Turn mower diagram here. Locate all the controls so you know how to stop and disengage your machine when necessary. 
• When mowing, make sure that all bystanders – this includes pets! – are at least 75 feet away from the machine. This prevents injury from any items thrown from the machine. If someone enters your mowing zone, stop the mower. 
• Do an inspection of your yard before mowing. Pick up all sticks, stones, wires, toys, and any other objects that could be picked up by your blades. 
• Avoid discharging towards sidewalks, roads, bystanders, and other obstructions. Debris that ricochets can cause serious damage. Instead, try to construct your mowing plan so the discharge goes back towards the yard. 
• Always use your discharge cover. 
• When riding over gravel, stop the blades. Also stop the blades when riding over walkways, roads, and when not cutting grass to avoid unnecessary injury from foreign objects.
• Never place your feet or hands near the rotating parts of your mower. When the machine is on and blades are in motion, don't approach the cutting deck. 
• If you have unusually dry, tall grass, don't attempt to cut it. Also avoid piles of dry leaves. These dry areas can come into contact with the engine exhaust, or build up on the mower deck and create a possible fire hazard. 
• If necessary, turn slowly uphill and use extra caution. Try to avoid turning on slopes. 
• Don't mow wet grass. 
• Unlike a bicycle, don't try to stabilize your zero-turn mower by placing your foot on the ground.

Snow Thrower Safety Tips

1. Cold temperatures affect your machine. After turning the equipment on, but before operating, give your snow thrower some time to adjust to the temperature. 

2. Once you've started the snow thrower, don't try to make any adjustments or repairs. If you notice that your equipment needs an adjustment once you've started, move the snow thrower to a safe maintenance area, and shut down the engine before starting any work. 

3. While operating, make sure you have a safety zone of at least 75 feet. Make sure that no pets, children, or neighbors enter this area. If they do, stop the snow thrower and wait for them to pass. 

4. If you need to use the reverse function on your snow thrower, keep an extra cautious eye as to avoid any falling or slipping. 

5. Avoid using your snow thrower on steep slopes at all costs. If you have to operate near a mid-size slope, use absolute extreme caution. If there is little visibility due to snow, don't operate your snow thrower at all. 

6. Never attempt to unclog the chute assembly while the snow thrower is still operating. As stated in safety tip number 2, never attempt to do any adjustments or repairs while the snow thrower is in operation. Shut off the engine first and remain behind the handles until all of your moving parts have come to a complete stop. Follow these instructions for unclogging your snow thrower chute assembly. 

1. As always, refer to your owner's manual. Familiarize yourself with the operation of your mower as well as the tire chains. Note any special concerns your manual might outline for your specific model. 

2. Make sure the mower is on a level, flat surface. Disconnect the spark plug ignition wire as well as the red battery cable. 

3. Lay your tire chains so they are flat on the ground with the open sides of the cross chain hooks facing upwards. The C-hook should be on the inside edge of the tire. Make sure the chain is not twisted at any point. 

4. Holding the middle of the side chains, lay the tire chain over your tire. Open ends of the cross chain hooks need to be facing AWAY from the tire. 

5. Now take the loose ends of the chain and tuck them under the tire. Lightly push the mower forward. Take the hooks at the ends of the chain, and connect the C-hook to the second or third link of the side chain on the inside of the tire. 

6. Pull the chain tight. You can now connect the locking link to the second or third link of the chain on the outside of the tire. Fold the locking link back and under the chain to lock it in place. 

7. Once you've attached both sides, continue tightening until the mower's tire chain is very snug. You want to be sure the chains are even on both sides of the tire. To have the chains fit even tighter, you can deflate the mower's tire before tightening the chains. Make sure you refer to your owner's manual for proper inflation before starting the mower again. 

8. Your chains are now secured on your mower's tires. Use your cable ties to secure any unused links from the tire chains.

1. The tractor's engine won't crank at all. 

This could be happening for five different, but simple problems to fix: 

• Check to be sure the safety switch button is depressed, the deck completely disengaged, and the parking brake is fully engaged. You should be sitting in the operator's seat while checking these items. 
• Make sure your battery is properly installed. Proper installation is as follows: negative terminal attached to the black ground wire. The positive terminal is attached to the big red wire going to the solenoid. Make sure your battery is fully charged before installing. 
• If you suspect your battery is weak or even dead, check the fluid levels. If you find that the fluid is low, fill just below the split rings with water. Fully charge the battery. 
• Think it might be a blown fuse? Check the fuse box for loose connections, and pinched or bare wires. Replace with an automotive type fuse if necessary. 
• The problem may also be caused by a loose engine round wire. Check to make sure the black ground wire is running from the engine to the frame or mounting bolt. 

2. The engine will crank, but not start. 

Try these four easy fixes:

• Ensure the throttle/choke is in the starting position. 
• Do you have enough gas? If the tank is properly fueled, check to see if the fuel line or filter is compromised by debris or dirt. Clean your fuel line and replace the filter if necessary. 
• Connect your spark plug wire and then check it with a tester. Clean and reset the gap. Replace if necessary. 
• Inspect the air filter for any debris or dirt. Clean and replace if necessary. 

3. Seeing your engine smoking can be a scary thing. Try these two steps before contacting a professional for more intense maintenance:

• You may have overfilled the engine oil. Check the oil level. 
• Your engine might have lost its crankcase vacuum. This can be caused by a broken or improperly seated dipstick. If so, replace the defective part. Your engine breather may also be defective, which means you need to replace the engine breather.

Cub Cadet suggests you change the air filter at least once a year; however you'll have to use your own judgement depending on the environment and conditions for which your mower is used. If you're using your mower on dusty, dry lawns in the summertime, you'll need to keep a close eye on your air filter as these conditions will cause clogging more quickly.

You'll need a replacement filter before beginning the replacement process. Some models offer a wash-and-reuse filter, while others require a new filter more frequently. Your owner's manual will direct you to the appropriate replacement filter.

-Safety is always first. Disconnect the spark plug ignition before you begin. To remove the cover of the air filter casing, unscrew the bolts.

-Separate the air cleaner body and air filter casing cover.

-Remove the Cub Cadet air filter from the mower.

-Replace the new filter into the base of the casing.

-Now replace the air cleaner lid and slide it into the air cleaner body. Fasten the bolt until securely attached.

-After you've completed replacing the filter and lid, reattach the spark plug.

Problem: Snow Thrower Fails to Propel 

Cause: Drive control cable is in need of adjustment 

Solution: Adjust drive control cable

Cause: Drive belt is loose or damaged

Solution: Tighten drive belt, or replace if necessary

Cause: Friction wheel is too worn

Solution: Replace friction wheel 

Problem: Snow Thrower Loses Power

Cause: Loose spark plug wire

Solution: Connect and tighten spark plug wire

Cause: Gas cap vent hold is plugged

Solution: Remove the ice and snow from the gas cap; ensure the vent hold is clear of all debris

Problem: Snow Thrower Engine Runs Erratically

Cause: Engine is running on "CHOKE" 

Solution: Move your choke lever to the "OFF" position

Cause: Stale fuel

Solution: Fill the tank with fresh fuel

Cause: Water or dirt in the fuel system

Solution: Drain old fuel, replace with fresh fuel 

Cause: Carburetor is out of adjustment

Solution: Contact specialist for servicing
