Don't let your lawn go to the wayside with colder temperatures setting in. Fall is just the right time to get your yard ready for spring growth. Follow our Fall Lawn Care Guide for the six steps that can ensure the health of your grass next year.

• Mow as needed through fall. Before the last two cuttings of the season, adjust the mower blade to the lowest setting. Keep in mind that you don't want to mow more than one third of the grass blade at one time. If you need to, gradually lower your blade height until reaching the final two cuttings. 
• Fall is a great time to aerate your lawn. Aerating in autumn allows for the fertilizer, water, and oxygen to reach the roots. You can usually rent a gas-powered aerator for about $70/day, or hire a local landscaper for larger yards. 
• Pace your fall raking. You don't want to wait until all of the leaves have fallen from your trees before you begin to clean them up. If you leave large amounts of leaf cover, they'll grow wet, stick together, and create a mat over the yard that can suffocate your grass and breed fungal disease. 
• If you're only going to fertilize once a year, fall is the best time to do it. By fertilizing in the fall, your grass will grow deep roots, and still have nutrients left over for a healthy start come next spring. 
• If you have any baren areas in your lawn, fall is also a good time to spread new seed. The most effective way to deal with balding spots is to purchase an all-in-one lawn repair mixture. This mixture will have grass seed, a quick-starter lawn fertilizer, and organic mulch. While laying the mixture, scratch the soil loose with a rack. Distribute a healthy layer of the mix over all balding areas. Compact the mixture lightly, then make sure to water thoroughly. Water the areas every other day for two weeks. 
• Did you have a small field of dandelions pop up in your yard this year? The weeds in your yard are in high energy absorbing mode come fall. They'll even take in weed killer! Many herbicides that will kill off the weeds should be used in early-to-mid autumn when daytime temperatures are still over 60 degrees.
